HTML/CSS for Beginners

From setting up your environment through what tags mean, selectors, the box model, Flexbox and Grid, and responsive design, all the way to publishing. Twenty lessons that build one complete portfolio site. Most lessons let you preview the result right there in the browser.

Curriculum

The 20 lessons are grouped into five chapters. Working through them in order is the best way, but you are welcome to dip into whatever interests you. HTML and CSS run in the browser alone, so almost nobody gets stuck on setup here.

Chapter 1 — HTML basics (lessons 1–5)

From setting up your environment through what tags mean, links and images, and form controls, to the skeleton of a page that carries meaning. Come out the other side and you can write a page and put it in the browser.

Chapter 2 — CSS basics (lessons 6–9)

Target the right place with selectors, get type and colour right, and control width and spacing with the box model. This is where you kill off "my CSS is not applying" and "the width is wrong".

Chapter 3 — Layout (lessons 10–13)

Line things up with Flexbox, build grids with Grid, and stack with position. Almost every layout on the web today can be built from these three.

Chapter 4 — Responsive design and polish (lessons 14–17)

Make the page hold together on a phone, then finish it off with images, variables and motion. You also pick up ways of organising CSS so it does not rot after you ship.

Chapter 5 — Finishing and publishing (lessons 18–20)

Form accessibility, tracking down causes in devtools, meta tags and going live. You take what you built all the way to showing it to other people.
